MEET DR. ALLISON
Hello. I am Dr. Allison Britt Kimmins, MD., MPH., FAAD, a Board -Certified Dermatologist, who has been practicing for almost 30 years. Dermatology has been a rewarding endeavor that has given me the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life in this country and abroad. About 15 years ago, I observed that many of my patients had similar chronic diseases; namely diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and obesity. I began to see an increase in autoimmune diseases and cancer (other than skin cancer) as well. After speaking with an increasing number of patients with chronic diseases, I realized that many of them did not see their condition as a problem. To my surprise, I discovered that many patients saw their chronic disease as a normal progression of aging that could be controlled or eradicated with medication. Motivated to help people increase their knowledge about the diagnosis, progression and treatment of chronic conditions, I began to explore how nutrition and lifestyle could help people improve their health and quality of life.
Today, I still practice Dermatology as I continue to study the link between disease, nutrition and health. In November of , I completed my certification to become a Food for Life Instructor through The Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). My relationship with PCRM has helped me to reach more people and through evidence-based science and cooking demonstrations of healthy plant-based recipes.
Fist Full of Health (FFH) was created to help educate people about the importance of eating a WFPBD (whole food plant-based diet) and adopting a healthy lifestyle. I hope to reach underserved populations, especially those without easy access to healthy plant-based foods. FFH also seeks to dispel some of the myths about WFPBD being deficient in certain nutrients. People often ask the question, what is a serving size? After hearing myself answer that question many times with my hand balled into a fist saying “it’s about the size of a fist”, I knew that Fist Full of Health had to be my logo.
